FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are there any changes to the Foundation’s funding priorities in 2027?
Yes. Beginning in 2027, the Foundation will not be accepting grant applications from Front Range organizations that have not previously received Foundation funding within the past five years. Learn more here.

When are applications due?
Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. MT on either:

  • January 15
  • July 1

The online application typically opens about one month before each deadline.

Do I need to submit a Letter of Inquiry before applying?
No. A Letter of Inquiry is not required, but is encouraged for:

  • First-time applicants
  • Organizations previously declined for funding
  • Organizations unsure whether their work aligns with the Foundation’s priorities

What is the typical grant amount?
Most grants are up to $10,000 and generally do not exceed 10% of an organization’s annual budget. Award amounts vary based on an organization’s size, scope, and needs.

What type of grants do you fund?
The Foundation primarily provides general operating and program support grants. In select cases, the Foundation may offer a challenge grant when it believes the approach will benefit the organization.

Do you fund capital campaigns?
Generally, no. In rare cases, the Foundation may consider capital campaign requests from rural organizations whose missions closely align with the Foundation’s funding priorities. We strongly encourage submitting a Letter of Inquiry before applying.

Do you award multi-year grants?
No. The Foundation does not currently award multi-year grants.

How often can my organization apply?
Organizations may apply for funding once every 12 months. Organizations funded in two consecutive years must take one year off before reapplying.

What happens after I submit an application?
You will receive an email confirmation once your application is submitted. A staff member will then review your request. We may contact you if additional information is needed or if we would like to schedule a site visit.

What does the Foundation look for in a grant application?
We consider several factors, including:

  • Alignment with the Foundation’s mission and funding priorities
  • Clear goals, strategies, and measurable outcomes
  • Community need and impact
  • Strong leadership and governance
  • Organizational and financial stability
  • Diversified funding sources
  • Demonstrated success and effectiveness
  • Ongoing evaluation and use of best practices
  • Community support through partnerships, volunteers, and donor engagement
  • A board of directors that is actively engaged and financially supportive

When will I receive a funding decision?
Funding decisions are typically made within four months of the application deadline, with decisions announced in late May and late November. Organizations are notified by mail once a decision has been made.

Do you require final reports?
Yes. A final report is required for all grants and is due within one year of receiving funding, typically by June 1 or December 1, or when a new application is submitted, whichever comes first. Visit our Reporting page for details.
